The NHS includes the following subsystems of roadways (note that a specific highway route may be on more than one subsystem): \n\n     •Interstate : The Eisenhower Interstate \n       System of highways retains its separate \n       identity within the NHS. \n\n     •Other Principal Arterials: These are highways \n       in rural and urban areas which provide access \n       between an arterial and a major port, airport, \n       public transportation facility, or other \n       intermodal transportation facility. \n\n     •Strategic Highway Network(STRAHNET): This \n       is a network of highways which are important \n       to the United States' strategic defense policy \n       and which provide defense access, continuity \n       and emergency capabilities for defense \n       purposes. \n\n     •Major Strategic Highway Network Connectors: \n       These are highways which provide access \n       between major military installations and \n       highways which are part of the Strategic \n       Highway Network. \n\n     •Intermodal Connectors: These highways \n       provide access between major intermodal \n       facilities and the other four subsystems \n       making up the NHS.",
